Top Considerations When Buying A Wheelchair

Self propelled or electric

When deciding on which type of wheelchair ask yourself the following questions-
• When and where will you use it?
• Are you strong enough and do you have a good hand grip to be able to propel the wheelchair yourself?

– Self propelled wheelchairs

With larger wheels at the rear this type of wheelchair allows the user to manoeuvre themselves around. If you will be using the wheelchair indoors think about the floor surfaces. On wooden or tiled floors or other smooth surfaces this type of wheelchair is easy to move about. But if your home is carpeted then you will find it harder to manoeuvre. When using self propelled wheelchairs outside consider the terrain of the area you live in. Country lanes or uneven woody areas can be difficult for users of this type of wheelchair. Controlling it on hills requires a great deal of strength and can be dangerous for those who are not able to control this type of wheelchair properly. Self propelled wheelchairs are still very popular and are a lot cheaper than electric ones.

– Electric wheelchairs

Although heavier than self propelled wheelchairs, electric ones are perfect for those who may not be physically able to turn the wheels of a chair themselves. They are great for outdoor use and work well on all types of terrain. Many electric wheelchairs have different seating options such as tilt and recline features that many users find very beneficial when in a wheelchair for long periods.

The maximum user weight

Maximum user weights are given for all types of wheelchairs, and these should never be exceeded. The maximum weight limit of most standard wheelchairs is 114 kilograms, which is 18 stone. There are heavy duty type wheelchairs that will cater for those who weigh more than this.

It is worth noting that exceeding the maximum weight allowance not only makes the wheelchair unsafe for the user, it will also make any warranty or guarantee invalid.

The seat depth

Those with a seat that is too short will find a lot of pressure being put on the buttocks due to not all of the thighs resting on the seat. If the wheelchair seat is too long then pressure may be felt behind the knee and the backrest not giving enough support to the users back.

The seat width

Seat widths are very important when it comes to buying a wheelchair. Too wide and you will find your arms won’t reach the arm rests properly at each side, which will make you feel less supported. Too narrow and you will feel hemmed in and uncomfortable. The standard seat widths are 16, 18 and 20 inches but other sizes are available. Try them out and make sure you can get in and out of the chair easily. Your weight needs to be distributed across the wheelchair seat evenly.

Manoeuvrability or stability

Some users will play sports in their wheelchair so will need a chair that they can manoeuvre easily, one that can make tight turns and can tip slightly.

However, stability is essential for those who may make self-stimulating actions that could cause them to tip over.
Your lifestyle and how you spend your days is a big consideration when buying a wheelchair as choosing a certain chair could either help or hinder you in everyday life.

Ease of folding and transporting

If the wheelchair being used will need to be taken on car journeys it is important to choose a model that will fold up easily and quickly. A lot of wheelchairs simply fold upwards and pull the wheels together when you pull the seat up. Although heavier than fixed rigid wheelchairs, folding wheelchairs will give users a much smoother ride on uneven terrains because they tend to give more. There are wheelchairs specially designed for ease of transport and are very easy to fold and use. Some chairs have wheels and footrests that come off at the touch of a button, making them easier to dismantle for transport.

Wheelchair weight

Steel framed wheelchairs weigh between 16 and 20 kgs, with the average weighing around 18 kgs. Aluminium wheelchairs can be several kgs lighter, making them easier it is to push and to lift into a car. Weight of the wheelchair should always be a big consideration, especially when looking at self propelled models.

Steel or aluminium frame

As mentioned above the aluminium wheelchairs are so much lighter than the steel framed models so are a lot easier to manoeuvre for many users. A point to mention though is the cost when considering steel or aluminium. The lighter the wheelchair the more expensive the cost, which usually means aluminium wheelchairs are normally the more expensive option.

Aluminium frames are very durable and tend to last much longer than steel frames, so are probably better for those that are using their wheelchair a lot more, especially outdoors.

Steel frames are still durable but make the wheelchair a lot heavier, so not as easy to manoeuvre or lift and fold away.

Cost

Whatever you are buying cost should always be considered, and wheelchairs are no different. But whilst it is important to get a good price, never buy a wheelchair just because it’s cheap. Comfort, fit, ease of use, suitability, durability and manoeuvrability must be found first or you will end up with a wheelchair that is not fit for purpose.
